Do you like walking in the tuscan hills? From ‘Torre a Castello’ to Asciano a panoramic trekking through the ‘Crete Senesi’ (clay hills)
Never equal to themselves.
It changes the light, makes it sculptured and then soft.
Shades of beige, lilac and deep purple, almost dense blue at dusk.
Tender green in spring, burnt clay in late summer.
The Crete Senesi, never equal to themselves.
ASCIANO: PANORAMIC TREKKING IN THE CRETE SENESI (AND A GOURMAND STOP)
From the hamlet of Torre a Castello starts the white road that reaches Asciano.
You can travel either on foot or by bicycle (even by car, for the less sporty). The road, mostly flat, is a pleasant excursion also for families with children.
The itinerary passes through different farmhouses, admiring along the way the unique view of the Crete Senesi.
It will certainly happen to see a flock grazing: they are the sheep of a dairy. Admire them placid from afar, they are often well guarded by shepherd dogs.
Living a short distance from the Crete Senesi, I often do the initial part of this trek.
After about an hour on foot, I go back. But I do not get back in the car right away.
You can not miss the stop at the La Fonte Dairy‘s direct sales point: fresh and aged pecorino, fresh sheep’s ricotta, pecorino cheese under walnut leaves and ‘briachi .. there’s something for everyone!
If you find it closed, ring the bell. They will come down and open you upstairs.
Those who want to complete the trek up to Asciano, will find an interesting parish church in Romanesque style: it is the Church of San Vito in Versuris.
Leave all the problems in the car, and walk to the embrace of the Crete Senesi.
They will be a balm for the soul.
